The rain came after midnight. It didn't start with a dramatic crash of thunder; it simply drifted in from the city, a cold, gray sheet that blurred the sharp, expensive edges of the estate.
I didn't turn on the lights in my bedroom. I sat on the wide window seat, my knees pulled up to my chin, wrapped in a dark cashmere blanket that felt too heavy for a sixteen-year-old's shoulders. The glass was freezing against my forehead. Outside, the garden lamps flickered through the downpour, casting long, distorted shadows across the manicured boxwood hedges.
